Book: A Century of Roundels by Algernon Charles Swinburne

LibriVox logoLibriVox logoA Century of Roundels
Algernon Charles Swinburne

A roundel (not to be confused with the rondel) is a form of verse used in English language poetry devised by Algernon Charles Swinburne (1837–1909). It

is a variation of the French rondeau form. It makes use of refrains, repeated according to a certain stylized pattern. A roundel consists of nine lines each having the same number of syllables, plus a refrain after the third line and after the last line. The refrain must be identical with the beginning of the first line: it may be a half-line, and rhymes with the second line. It has three stanzas and its rhyme scheme is as follows: A B A R ; B A B ; A B A R ; where R is the refrain. Swinburne had published a book A Century of Roundels. He dedicated these poems to his friend Christina Rossetti, who then started writing roundels herself, as evidenced by the following examples from her anthology of poetry: Wife to Husband; A Better Resurrection; A Life’s Parallels; Today for me; It is finished; From Metastasio. (Summary by wikipedia)

This project is a bit of milestone for me, as it’s my first solo project.

Autumn Leaves, Original Pieces in Prose and Verse by Various, Anne Wales Abbott ed.

LibriVox logoThe pieces gathered into this volume were, with two exceptions, written for the entertainment of a private circle, without any view to publication. The editor would express her thanks to the writers, who, at her solicitation, have allowed them to be printed. They are published with the hope of aiding a work of charity,—the establishment of an Agency for the benefit of the poor in Cambridge,—to which the proceeds of the sale will be devoted. Summary by Anne W. Abbot, ed (1808-1908)

My contributions to this collaborative effort :-
“06 – The Sounds of Morning in Cambridge”
“07 – The Sounds of Evening in Cambridge”
“23 – Fashion”
“29 – The Home-Beacon”
“30 – The Fourth of July”

Short Poetry Collection 080

LibriVox logoThe “LibriVox Short Poetry Collection 80”, is an open collection of poems for the month of June 2009.
The two recordings I contributed to this collection are Azure and Gold, and Corporal Stare.
It took a long time to find two poems that hadn’t been recorded before for the LibriVox project. My knowledge of poetry & their writers is somewhat limited and rather inadequate.
The journey was a fun one though and I learned about copyrighting, poems about war and that the amount of poetry I’ve read so far is truly the tip of the iceberg.
Here’s to discovery, please take the time to listen to the other contributions to these collections. Eighty and counting!
