Admittedly, I have never read crime fiction for myself. A strange statement isn’t it.
I’ve read Sherlock Holmes and some Patricia Cornwell novels and the like; but that was years ago when I used to read to my Mother. In the end she got fed up of hearing my voice (didn’t blame her either) and started to “request” audio books, which were becoming popular again.

The Gates by John Connolly

The Gates

Category : boys fiction, physics, Satanism, Good, Evil, humorous, Halloween, fantasy, Hell, Large Hadron Collider

Originally published : 2009

Overview : The gates of Hell are about to open. Mind the gap.

Young Samuel Johnson and his dachshund Boswell are trying to show initiative by trick-or-treating a full three days before Halloween. Which is how they come to witness strange goings-on at 666 Crowley Avenue.

The Abernathys don’t mean any harm by their flirtation with Satanism. But it just happens to coincide with a malfunction in the Large Hadron Collider that creates a hole in the universe, a hole through which can be glimpsed a pair of enormous gates.

The gates to Hell. And there are some pretty terrifying beings just itching to get out…

I am not responsible should the link be removed. Sorry, you should have listened to/read it ages ago anyhow ;) )

It’s May 2010 already! Technically, (and I’m not counting any LibriVox readings) this is my first book this year and I’m feeling slightly guilty for leaving this so long. I really ought to be doing better than this, reading more than I have. Certainly writing more than I have been. My little blog looks so lonely with only the weekly poem on Sundays to mark the blog calender.

Why have I picked this book?
It’s sounds like a fun adventure, has a male lead for a change and it’s written with a younger audience in mind so I won’t have to tax my poor little brain too much (I hope), it features the LHC and I really like the book cover. It’s such a compelling piece of artwork, the tag lines just helped to draw me in even further.
Plus! – John Connolly is more well known for crime and detective fiction centred around the character private detective Charlie Parker which just makes me even more intrigued.

Mind The Gap!

Once Bitten, Twice Shy by Jennifer Rardin

Once Bitten, Twice Shy

Series : Book 1 of 6 (currently)

Category : Urban Fantasy, Action, Spy-Fi

Originally published : 2007

Overview :

Vayl is the CIA’s top assassin. A master of black ops, he has never failed. He’s also a 291-year-old vampire. Assigned to protect Vayl, if such a formidable creature can be said to require protection, is Jasmine Parks – ‘Jaz’ to her friends. But Jaz has got problems – and not just the run-of-the-mill ones you’d expect from someone whose job consists of putting her life on the line for an undead assassin. She hasn’t had sex in god knows how long, so Vayl’s almost overpowering vampire charisma is making it increasingly difficult for her to keep their relationship …professional. Her personal life is a long line of missed birthdays and Christmases, and lies and excuses to her family. And then there’s that other thing: the blackouts. See, there’s times that Jaz can’t account for and things that happen in those times that Vayl – not to mention the CIA – may not appreciate. And if they find out, Jasmine knows it won’t just be her contract that’s terminated … (from amazon.co.uk)
